OFFSHORE WIND FARM BUTENDIEK

The construction of offshore wind farm Butendiek, located in the North Sea west of Sylt, started in early 2014.
Offshore Wind Farm Butendiek
Butendiek comprises 80 turbines with each 3.6 MW, resulting in a total capacity of 288 MW.

Being commissioned in mid 2015 this wind farm will provide 370,000 households with renewable energy.

Installation timeline

  • START OF OFFSHORE CONSTRUCTION

The offshore works start with the installation of the filter layer for the scour protection. The layer has a diameter of approx. 35 m and consists of gravel and sand. It prevents the soil at the foundation from scouring.

  • PILE DRIVING OF FIRST MONOPILE

A tug transports the floating monopile to the turbine location. The monopile is then connected to the lifting gear, upended and driven by a hydraulic hammer up to 50 m into the seabed.

  • INSTALLATION OF OFFSHORE SUBSTATION

The installation of the offshore substation is divided into two parts – at first the jacket foundation is put on the ground anchored in the seabed with four piles. Following up is the topside that is welded to the jacket. The heavy lift vessel Rambiz transports and installs both parts.

  • START OF WIND FARM CABLE LAYING

The cables are loaded in a predetermined sequence onto the cable laying vessel and are laid section by section between the foundations. Their ends are pulled-in the monopiles. Afterwards the cable is buried to the ground.

  • INSTALLATION OF OFFSHORE WIND TURBINES

The installation vessel Bold Tern sails with eight sets of turbines from the installation harbour to the project site and installs the turbine in five steps – tower, nacelle and the three rotor blades.

  • COMMISSIONING OF THE OFFSHORE WIND FARM

After installation and mechanical and electrical completion of the turbines they are commissioned. Following a short test phase the turbines are fully operational and produce power.

  • COMPLETION OF WORKS

Completion of offshore works and handing over completely to operation.
